About Us
The Society of Jesus, a Christian Religious Order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, has been active in the field of education throughout the world since its origin. In India, the Society of Jesus is at present responsible for more than 110 High Schools, 23 University Colleges, 14 Technical Institutes and 5 other Institutes in which over 1,15,000 young people belonging to every religion, social class, community and linguistic group are being educated through the medium of English and different regional languages. These institutions are part of the Catholic Church’s effort to share in the country’s educational undertaking. This effort while being particularly responsible towards the Christian community has always been at the service of the whole nation.
In the world the Society of Jesus is responsible for over 1865 Educational Institutions in 65 countries. These Jesuit Educational Institutions engage the efforts of approximately 98,000 teachers, who educate approximately 17, 92,000 students.
Jesuit education is inspired by a vision of man drawn from the life and teaching of Jesus Christ who has always been respected and admired by the people of India. It is also based on the principles of character-formation elaborated by Ignatius of Loyola. This vision and these principles give the Jesuit pupils high ideals of humanism and service, towards which they are invited continually to strive.
St. Xavier’s School Doranda, Ranchi, is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th Century who travelled to India. It was founded in 1960 and is managed by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus popularly known as Jesuits. It is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi. It prepares students for the ICSE (10th – only boys) and ISC (12th – Co-ed) examinations conducted by the Council.
The Plus Two section was flagged off to a flying start by Fr. James Lakra, S.J. & Fr. Ajit Kr. Xess, S.J. in 2001. The first chief co-coordinator to implement their vision was the late Mr. Hira Prasad, one of the founder teachers of St. Xavier’s School, Doranda. Now the School conducts classes for Plus Two in Arts, Commerce and Science streams. The Arts Stream has been initiated by the new Principal Fr. Sanjay Kerketta, S.J. in 2021 onwards.
The management of the School is vested in the Ranchi Jesuit Society. The President of the Governing Body is Rev. Fr. Provincial of the Ranchi Jesuit Province.
The School is intended primarily for the education of Catholic boys, particularly of the Tribal Community. However, with due regard to the strength of each class and the academic ability of the pupil, students of all religious persuasions are admitted, without any interference with their respective creeds. The School makes a preferential option for the marginalized and seeks to give an all-round formation, inculcating both human and spiritual values.
The school follows a new and outstanding curriculum with expert faculty members to unravel the joys of learning. Innovative methods, based on the Integral Pedagogical Paradigm cater to both the intellectual and affective dimensions conducive to overall moral, religious and aesthetic aspects of growth – an integrated approach to harmonize all the elements required for the formation of fine human beings.
The School aims at forming young men and women of competence commitment, compassion and of conscience. It aims at the integral personal information of the young. To accomplish this, special efforts are made;
To help pupils become mature, spiritually oriented men of character;
To encourage them continually to strive after excellence in every field;
To value and judiciously use their freedom;
To be clear and firm on principles and courageous in action;
To be unselfish in the service of their fellow men and women;
To become agents of needed social change in their country.
St. Xavier’s School, Doranda, thus aims at making its contribution towards a radical transformation of present day social conditions, so that the principles of social justice, equality of opportunity, genuine freedom, respect for religious and moral values enshrined in the Constitutions of India may prevail and the possibility of giving a fully human existence may be open before all.
